Traditional high school does not work for everyone. Bullying, COVID-19 concerns, and even sleep schedules can all bring about the desire for something different. If traditional high school is not working for your student, there are options, including online high school.

What is online high school?

Online high school can mean many things, from taking courses through your traditional high school in an online format to enrolling in an online charter high school. Depending on the state you live in and the program you choose for your student, the online high school may offer college preparatory classes, focus on STEM coursework or the fine arts, offer hands-on learning and internship opportunities, or even provide AP (advanced placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) classes.

Is online high school synchronous or asynchronous?

For colleges and universities, online classes are typically offered either synchronously, where the student needs to be present online at a specific day and time, or asynchronously, where the student can watch recorded lectures and complete coursework at their convenience. While every online high school is different, most offer a hybrid of both synchronous and asynchronous classes, meaning that the majority of the time the courses are asynchronous with weekly, online meetings to promote discussion. This is very convenient for students who prefer to sleep late as well as for those who have a busy schedule outside of school due to elite sports or the need to work a part-time job.

Is online high school the same as homeschooling?

No. While homeschoolers often take online courses, their education is directed solely by their parents, according to their state's regulations. Online high school is still a traditional school, monitored by a local school district or state agency. Only the location and delivery method of the curriculum has changed.

Can my child earn college credits while in online high school?

There are many opportunities to earn college credit while still in high school, both on your own as well as coordinated through an online high school.

Is online high school expensive?

Some states offer online charter high school free to the students living in their state while others charge tuition. Tuition may be on a per-class basis or a flat fee per semester.

Is online high school unusual?

Actually, online high school is more common than you might think. While online high school has been around for some time, many parents discovered that it worked well for their students during the pandemic and attendance has soared. In fact, some programs reported a 15-fold growth during the pandemic.

The important thing is to do what is right for your learner. If traditional school is not working, try an online high school. You may be surprised.
